Onyx, a chalcedony variety, is a captivating gemstone celebrated for its deep, intense colors and smooth, polished surface. Most famously recognized in its jet-black form, onyx can also be found in shades of white, brown, and even banded variations (sardonyx). Its name, derived from the Greek word "onux," meaning "fingernail" or "claw," is thought to refer to its waxy luster and sharp edges. Historically, onyx has been highly valued by diverse cultures, from ancient Egyptians who used it for pottery and jewelry to Romans who carved signet rings and intaglios. Metaphysically, onyx is often associated with strength, protection, and self-control, believed to absorb negative energy and promote emotional stability. Its durable nature (7 on the Mohs scale) makes it a popular choice for carvings, beads, cabochons, and inlays, offering a timeless and elegant aesthetic to any piece.
